SUMMARY:October 2025 Third Wednesday Workshop
DESCRIPTION:You Can’t Make This Stuff Up: A Journalist’s Approach to Writing Creative Nonfiction \nIn this talk\, author Annette McGivney will share her four decades of experience as a journalist writing investigative magazine articles and nonfiction books. Participants will learn techniques for conducting in-depth research\, journalistic interviews and turning factual material into writing that reads like a novel with narrative descriptions\, character development\, and an engaging story structure. \n\nAnnette McGivney is an investigative journalist and the author of five nonfiction books. Annette’s most recent book\, Pure Land\, about the murder of Tomomi Hanamure in the Grand Canyon\, won the National Outdoor Book Award in 2018. Pure Land was the debut selection for Outside magazine’s book club in 2017 and named by the magazine on a list of “outdoor books that shaped the last decade.” Her forthcoming book\, Plastic Shaman\, a true crime story about the wellness industry’s appropriation of Native American culture\, will be published by Torrey House Press in 2026. Annette is also a frequent contributor to the Guardian\, Outside and Arizona Highways. She is a professor emeritus in Journalism at Northern Arizona University and lives in Cortez\, Colorado. \n\nAs always\, all genres and experience levels are welcome and admission is free. If you can\, show up early to purchase a snack or beverage (or a book!) in support of our generous hosts at ZU Gallery!

This free event is Tuesday\, Jan. 27 from 5 to 6 p.m. \nThriller author Mark Stevens from Mancos\, murder mystery author Scott Graham from Durango\, and Cortez’s own beloved romantic comedy author Bethany Turner will draw back the curtain on what it takes to make it in the world of fiction writing today\, sharing their behind-the-scenes tales from the world of publishing. There will be plenty of time for questions and a discussion about the publishing business today. \nAbout Scott Graham\nScott Graham is the author of the National Park Mystery Series\, published by Torrey House Press. The nine-books-and-counting in the critically acclaimed series feature archaeologist Chuck Bender and his family as they encounter villainous intrigue in America’s iconic western national parks\, illuminating environmental and social justice issues specific to the parks along the way. In addition to his mysteries\, Scott is the author of five nonfiction books\, including Extreme Kids\, winner of the National Outdoor Book Award. More about Scott:www.scottfranklingraham.com \nAbout Mark Stevens\nMark Stevens is the author of The Flynn Martin Thriller series including No Lie Lasts Forever (June 2025) and Two Truths and A Lie (April 2026)\, both from Thomas & Mercer; The Fireballer (Lake Union\, 2023)\, and The Allison Coil Mystery Series including Antler Dust\, Buried by the Roan\, Trapline\, Lake of Fire\, and The Melancholy Howl. Stevens was one of three co-editors for Four Corners Voices\, an anthology of fiction\, essays\, and poetry that won the Colorado Book Award for Best Anthology in 2025. More: www.writermarkstevens.com \nAbout Bethany Turner\nBethany Turner is the author of eleven romance novels\, including Brynn and Sebastian Hate Each Other\, winner of the 2024 Colorado Book Award and an Amazon Editors’ Pick for Best Romance. Its follow-up\, Cole and Laila Are Just Friends\, was a 2025 finalist for the Colorado Book Award and winner of the Colorado Authors League Award for Best Romance. The popular Adelaide Springs series\, published by HarperCollins\, concluded in the summer of 2025 with Wes and Addie Had Their Chance. Bethany writes pop culture–infused rom-coms for a new generation of readers who crave fiction that tackles the thorny issues of life with humor and insight. She lives in Cortez\, Colorado with her husband\, whom she met in the nineties in a chat room called Disco Inferno. As sketchy as it sounds\, it worked out pretty well in this case\, and they are now the proud parents of two grown sons. Learn more at bethanyturner.com. \n

SUMMARY:March 2026 Third Wednesday Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Dear Four Corners Writers\,\nWe invite you to an exploration of “Letters in Our Literary Lives” at the regular third Wednesday meeting in March. Letters play important roles in our literary lives.  They advance plot lines\, define character\, comprise the heart of a story\, and even unlock our creativity in ways that a blank page just can’t do.\nHave you noticed how often letters appear in fiction\, nonfiction\, poetry\, and cinema? We have. \n \nWe hope you’ll join us for this inquiry into letters in our literary lives where we will be citing\, reading from\, and exhibiting letter-based literature; offering a short history of letters in literature; discussing how letters are used in stories; talking about the process of turning letters into biography; and musing about how writing a letter can open our minds to the creative process.\n \nIf you would like to prepare for this workshop\, give some thought as to how a single letter or clutch of letters has impacted your writing life\, your daily life\, or your thinking.\n \nSee you soon and best regards from Mimi (Gorman)\, Anne (Benson)\, and Susan (Carpenter Noble).\nAs always\, all genres and experience levels are welcome and admission is free. If you can\, show up early to purchase a snack or beverage (or a book!) in support of our generous hosts at ZU Gallery!
