SUMMARY:A Place We Call Home
DESCRIPTION:In this poetry workshop\, we will explore poems from 4 Corners poets laureate Jake Skeets\, Laura Tohe\, Cristoso Apache & Tommy Archuleta\, who will be our distinguished visiting writers at the Four Corners Poetry Festival on Saturday\, June 13th at the Durango Public Library. Using these poems as inspiration\, we will generate our own poems to celebrate the places we call home through vivid language\, sharp imagery\, and experimental form. No writing experience is necessary. Ages 13+ are welcome! \nGeneva Toland is a writer\, songleader\, naturalist\, and educator living in the juniper-piñon pine foothills of the La Plata mountains\, homelands of the Ute\, Diné and Puebloan peoples. Her debut poetry collection\, Council of Thunder\, is the winner of Wayfarer Book’s 2025 Homebound Poetry Prize\, and will be available in October 2026. Her work has also appeared in Southern Humanities Review\, Camas\, Four Corners Voices\, Reckoning\, and humana obscura\, among others. She is a poetry editor at Terrain.org and received her MFA in Poetry from the Institute of American Indian Arts. DESCRIPTION:What is an Author’s Publishing Collective?\nPresented by Serra Wildheart\n\nThe journey from dream to published author is sometimes a long one with twists\, obstacles\, and a few mystery doors. Serra Wildheart will share how she went from dreamer to published and what she learned along the way\, including: tips and strategies for finishing the draft\, navigating the process from first draft to published (editing and editors\, cover artists\, etc)\, how writing groups can help you get there\, and finally\, how and why she formed the authors’ publishing cooperative\, Scribe Hive Publishing. What is a publishing cooperative? Serra will explain what a publishing cooperative is and how they work.\n\n\nSerra Wildheart is a multi-genre indie author\, speaker\, and coach. The Legends of Star Junction series invites readers on an entertaining and insightful journey with captivating characters and mystical allies. Wildheart trained with Peruvian medicine men\, is a practitioner of Usui and GoldenTeraMai Reiki\, and is a book and spiritual coach. Her background in project management\, tech\, customer service and wine gives her a rich pool of experience to draw from. She is the managing co-founder of Scribe Hive Publishing\, which is an authors’ publishing cooperative that provides a community of support for other independent authors. Hiking with the dogs and time outside is cherished. Painting\, baking\, and sharing good food\, wine\, and travels with her beloved DogDad (husband) fill the time when she is not writing. In addition to the Legends of Star Junction series\, she also published The Rebel Dogs\, a ‘just for fun book’ to raise money for animal rescues\, and the Lucy & Fizzy Adventure Dogs Series which includes fun and educational books for kids.\n\nAs always\, all genres and experience levels are welcome and admission is free.
