Why is there so much fake news and misinformation these days? The usual explanation says that malicious actors are duping innocent news consumers. That explanation is mistaken. Instead, fake news is a commodity that news consumers want and news companies provide.
Dr. Justin P. McBrayer is Director of University Partnerships at Heterodox Academy, former professor of philosophy at Fort Lewis College, and expert in social epistemology and misinformation. His most recent book, Misinformation: The Basics, was published by Routledge University Press in March of 2026.
